Genuine Ajwa dates: how to check what you are buying
How Malaysian retailers and resellers can check Ajwa before they buy wholesale — origin, label, look and texture, and the papers a real importer can show.
Ajwa is the date Malaysians ask for by name, and it sells at a premium. That is exactly why buyers search "kurma ajwa asli" before they order. If you are buying Ajwa to resell, these are the checks worth making before money changes hands.
1. Start with the origin
Ajwa is a Madinah variety. A carton of Ajwa should say it comes from Saudi Arabia, and good packers name Madinah on the pack. If the country of origin is missing, vague, or somewhere else, ask why before you buy.
2. Read the whole label
A pack sold in Malaysia should carry, at minimum:
- the product name and variety,
- the country of origin,
- the packer, and the importer or distributor in Malaysia,
- net weight,
- production and expiry dates,
- the label in Bahasa Malaysia (other languages can be added).
A plain bag or carton with no importer details gives you nothing to go back to if there is a problem.
3. Know what Ajwa looks like
Ajwa is a small to medium, dark brown to almost black date, soft and slightly dry to the touch, with fine wrinkles and a mild sweetness. It is often confused with Safawi, another dark Madinah date. Safawi is usually longer and more oval, with a moister bite. The date guide puts the two side by side.
Look-alikes are not necessarily fakes: some sellers simply label a dark date loosely. Either way, you want the variety on the label to match what is in the carton.
4. Ask for the papers
An importer bringing in Ajwa from Saudi Arabia will have shipping and origin documents for each consignment. You do not need to see them every time, but a supplier who cannot tell you which harvest and packer your stock came from is a supplier to question.
5. Be careful with prices that look too good
Ajwa costs more than everyday dates for a reason: it comes from a limited growing area. If one offer is far below everyone else's, check the grade and origin before you check the margin.
6. Grades are real, and they are not fakes
Within genuine Ajwa there are grades by size and quality, so two real cartons can look and price differently. Ask your supplier which grade you are being quoted, and compare like with like.
